If you wanted to get really serious you could also set up a print viewing booth, so you can reliably compare between screen and print.īrightness/luminance adjustment is part of calibration, and is often the only hardware adjustment that can be made in a monitor. There's a lot of advice about monitor brightness on the internet, with arbitrary measurements thrown in for good measure, but all you really need initially is a decent monitor and ambient lighting which is sufficiently subdued for you to be able to discern shadow detail in your pictures. I checked this out earlier - the Spyder 3 Pro appears not to allow adjustment to specific luminance levels (example: 120 cd/m²), but it does allow visual adjustment. Please forgive my ignorance but does the Spyder 3 Pro make any adjustments for screen brightness as I have just been reading a review that appears to indicate that only the 'Elite version' does that unless you upgrade the software. The display is therefore only calibrated when you are using it as a monitor with the TV.Įdit: As Canti said, check out the calibration section of the forums for more info.We have both here, both are good and they do much the same job. The settings (brightness, contrast, colour, etc) on the TV remain untouched. At the end of the calibration process, it generates and installs a colour profile on your PC which makes all the necessary adjustments. The meter is also connected to the PC, so the process is more or less completely automatic. The test patterns are generated within the PC software and hence are displayed directly on the PC monitor. The Spyder3 Pro/Elite software works differently. The settings you choose are then of course saved in the TV itself. You then manually adjust the TV's controls (brightness, contrast, colour, etc) to dial the settings in to give you the most accurate picture possible. These measurements let you know how accurate your display is.
As you do this, you take measurements with the meter on your PC. Using a separate DVD player, you then play the supplied test pattern DVD through the TV. The meter itself is then placed onto the TV which you wish to calibrate (NOT the monitor/TV which you are using for the PC). You install the calibration software onto a PC or laptop and also connect the meter to the same PC/laptop via USB. With the Spyder3 TV package you get a test pattern DVD, calibration software and a meter. It doesn't sound like you quite understand the calibration process.
